Kraken Black Spiced Rum is a Caribbean black spiced rum. It is distributed in the United States by Proximo Spirits, and named after the kraken, a mythical giant squid-like sea monster.

Project overview

The content production studio at SapientRazorfish wanted to expand their photography portfolio and studio capabilities. This attempt would specifically focus on product photography. We decided as a group that expanding on the bottle niche would be a great start. Kraken Rum brand caught our eye and knew that the brand would allow room for creative liberty. The shoot would ultimetely result with some great concepts.

My Role

I served as lead Art Director and had a small team of designers along the process. We worked closely with our photographer – particularly on framing composition, prop placement and lighting of the shots. It was a fun collaborate process from beginning to end.

Kraken provided a nice brand precense, which inspired a lot of the shots. It was key to maintain this presence and focus on introducing elements that would stay true to the brand. We were after that mysterious out-on-sea kind of vibe.

This being an internal project meant there was little to no budget. Taking that into cosideration, the planning process was carefully thought out. From a budget perspective, we had to be mindfull on the budget limitations when brainstorming the concepts. Surfaces and backdrops were hand made from scrap materials but provided the rustic look we sought after. Research on standard bottle photography practices was also key to succesfully pull this shoot off.

Once we consolidated selects from the shoot, there was additional cleanup and refinement that helped bring out the details of each shot. A standard image cleanup and color correction was conducted – paying extra attention to the fine details of the bottle itself as well as the other elements that made up the composition.
